Brittany’s Story

In 2015, I married my best friend Michael and he is so amazing! I already had two kids but he did not have any. The year after we got married, we decided to try for a baby. I became pregnant right away and we were so excited!!! At our eight week check-up we got news that our baby’s heartbeat was faint and they asked us to come back in two weeks. We went back and our baby’s heartbeat was strong and we were able to breathe! Months passed by and the pregnancy was going great so we thought. We are now at 20 weeks going in to find out the gender. “It’s a boy!” We were once again elated however all of the staff nurses and doctor were quiet. “You need to go to Jackson to see a specialist”. I was 24 weeks pregnant before I was able to get an appointment. The specialist told us our baby had a heart defect and is not going to make it. He said “if he does survive he will be severely disabled.” The doctor asked if we wanted to terminate the pregnancy. My husband and I both said “No!”. I asked the doctor to do all he could. I was admitted to the hospital the same day. I was advised I’d have to stay until 34 weeks. I was willing because I was already in love with my little guy.  While we were in the hospital, things took a turn. My baby was getting sicker. “He is going to die inside of you”, the doctor said. I prayed to God to help us. We made it to 27 weeks and baby Korbyn was slowly fading away. We went in for an emergency C-section. The baby was taken out really fast but he didn’t cry or make a sound. He was whisked away. After ten minutes the doctor came back to tell us Korbyn’s lungs would not expand, even on a ventilator, and they had done all they could do. On September 9th at 1:30 p.m. we were handed our baby boy. He was fighting trying to breathe. We were told his heart was weak. In less than three minutes his little body did a big jerk and he stopped moving. This was the most devastating day of my life. We miss him so much.

In loving memory of Korbyn Michael Perry
